What is Endodontic Treatment?
Root canal (endodontic) treatment is performed when the soft inner tissue of the tooth (the pulp) has been damaged, usually through decay or physical trauma. Treatment consists of removing the pulp and then cleaning, sterilizing, filling and sealing the root canals. The tooth remains nourished by the adjacent tissues of the gums and jaw. Over 95% of cases are successful, while a few may require additional treatment. After root canal treatment is completed, it is very important to return to your family dentist so that a permanent restoration can be placed. Usually a crown is needed to protect the tooth from chipping.
What are the alternatives to treatment?
Once the dental pulp is diseased, the only alternative to root canal tratment is extraction. After an extraction, replacing the tooth with a bridge, implant or partial denture is generally more costly than the root canal treatment and crown.
Can all teeth be treated?
Some teeth cannot be treated successfully. Dr. Smith will explain potential complications before treatment. A few cases will require additional treatment if the tissues do not heal normally after the root canal treatment has been completed.
How long will it take?
Most cases can be completed in one visit, although some complex procedures may require additional appointments. You should plan on at least two hours for each visit. Because of the long appointments, we request that parents make other arrangements for the care of small children.
Can I go back to work or school after the root canal?
Yes.
When can I eat?
Patients should wait 1 hour before eating. Avoid any hard or chewy foods. Try to eat on the opposite side to avoid fracturing the tooth Dr. Smith worked on.
When can I drink?
Patients should avoid any hot liquids until the numbness is gone. Patients may drink cold liquids immediately after the procedure.
How long after the procedure will I be tender?
Patient can experience mild tenderness to touch, biting & chewing for up to two weeks or longer following the procedure. If you develop any severe tenderness or pain, please contact our office.
Will someone need to drive me to and from my appointment?
No. We use local anesthesia to numb only the area we are working on.
Do I need to continue my prescriptions even though I am having no pain or symptoms?
Yes, you need to follow the directions that were given to you by Dr. Smith.
